The First Named Skirmish Map

Ashemark is the first battlefield PlaySide has named in development for Game of Thrones: War for Westeros. It sits in the **Westerlands**, Lannister country, and is being built as a **focused 1v1** map rather than a sprawling free-for-all sandbox. That distinction matters: Ashemark is a skirmish stage, not the full overworld.

The official July 2026 update describes two open lanes with defensible positions that create clear chances to pressure, hold, flank, and counterattack. PlaySide also used Ashemark as a visual-fidelity example — grounded Westeros art that still leaves readable space for army movement. If you learned RTS on two-lane or three-lane maps, this is the closest confirmed analogue.

Lore placement is not flavour text. Ashemark was caught in **Robb Stark's campaign** through the Westerlands during the War of the Five Kings. The map is therefore a natural Stark versus Lannister stage even when other factions load in. Read the biomes guide for how Westerlands terrain should feel compared with the Wall or King's Landing.

Two Lanes, Four Jobs

PlaySide's verbs are pressure, hold, flank, and counterattack. On a two-lane map that usually means one lane becomes the grind and the other becomes the punish. Sending every squad down a single road invites a rear charge — especially now that cavalry are described as having the mass to break exposed archer lines.

Defensible positions imply towers, ridges, or camp edges you can actually hold with spear squads. The July update's anti-cavalry example — light infantry spearmen shutting down a charge — is likely to matter more on Ashemark than on an open King's Landing field. Keep a spear squad on the lane you expect horses to use.

Hero placement will decide lane ownership. Jon Snow wants the contested front. Tywin Lannister wants a pocket behind the hold, buffing the war machine without eating the first cavalry hit. Practice that split in your head before launch; combat explains why squads, not blobs, make the split possible.

How Ashemark Fits the Wider Map Roster

PlaySide listed King's Landing and the Wall as other skirmish destinations, then singled out Ashemark as the map currently in development with a published layout philosophy. Expect the full roster to mix iconic set-pieces with lesser-known contested lands. Ashemark is the "readable 1v1" slot; the Wall will likely play as a choke; King's Landing as a prize siege.

Sandbox multiplayer still uses the overworld. Ashemark is what you get when two armies meet in the Westerlands or when you queue a custom 1v1. Do not confuse a skirmish load of Ashark with owning the castle on the campaign layer — outcomes still feed back, but the tactical map is a designed arena.

We will add spawn notes, resource spots, and screenshot callouts when the Gamescom gameplay reveal or a later diary shows the layout on screen. Until then, this page tracks only what PlaySide has written.

Practice Plan Before You Queue

If you main Stark, study how a northern infantry army takes a defensive position on someone else's gold-coloured hills. If you main Lannister, study how to force a fight in the open lane where cavalry mass matters. Targaryen and Night King players should ask which lane a dragon or giant "trump card" should break first — probably the one where the enemy has already committed their hold.

Pair this page with game modes so you know when you are in skirmish versus sandbox, and with RTS basics if two-lane maps are new to you. Ashemark is small enough to learn and large enough to punish greedy all-ins.

When more Westerlands maps appear, they will link from the map hub. Ashemark stays the reference 1v1 until PlaySide names another.
