How to Read the July 2026 Development Update
Player guide to PlaySide's July 2026 War for Westeros update: early 2027 delay, hero roles, squad counters, Ashemark, and a practical prep list before Gamescom.
Read the Blog, Then Use This Checklist
PlaySide's July 2026 post is short and dense. This guide is the player translation: what to change in your expectations, what to practise, and what to ignore. The full news write-up lives on the July 2026 development update page. Start there if you want the chronology; stay here if you want a plan.
Three facts override older wiki language. The launch window is **early 2027**. Combat is **squad-based** with named counters. **Tywin Lannister** and **Ashemark** are now official nouns, not fan speculation. If a year-old trailer still says 2026 on the end card, that card is outdated.
The diary video above remains useful for motion and scale. The July blog is useful for rules. Watch one, read the other, then open combat.
Rewrite Your Faction Notes
Stark notes should now say: Jon Snow is a front-line rally, not a distant lord. Your job in House Stark is to keep him in the blob that is about to break, then counter-charge. Practise hold-position habits from controls.
Lannister notes should now say: Tywin is a back-line coordinator. Jaime can still be the knight fantasy from earlier marketing, but the July post's strategic brain is Tywin. If you like economy-plus-precision, you are even more in the right house. Update your faction quiz thinking accordingly.
Targaryen and Night King notes should highlight trump cards — dragon and giant — and the fact that those units exist to break a composition that is already losing the lane, not to delete a well-made spear wall by themselves. Ashemark is the map on which to imagine that decision.
A Two-Week Prep List Before Gamescom
Before 25 August 2026, do five things. Wishlist on Steam. Subscribe to the raven newsletter. Follow @GoTWFW. Skim RTS basics if you have never used control groups. Set a calendar alert for Opening Night Live using the times on the Gamescom page.
If you already did those in 2025, do them again only to confirm you are not following Dragonfire by mistake. The mobile game is a different product — comparison here.
After the reveal, return to this guide. We will add a "what the trailer changed" section instead of starting a third overlapping article. That keeps the guides hub readable and the PC nav dropdown from growing past its eight-item cap.
What Not to Assume
Do not assume a closed beta was announced. It was not. Do not assume consoles. They were not. Do not assume system requirements. Steam still says TBD — see system requirements. Do not assume the early-2027 window is January; "early" can mean the first months of the year, not a week after New Year.
Do not treat community tier lists from 2025 as current. Hero leveling and squad counters change how "dragon first" or "undead flood" would play. Our tier list is a preview, not a patch bible.
Do treat PlaySide's quality-language as sincere until they miss the next promised update cadence. They said more news would follow in the weeks after July. Gamescom is the proof point. If that trailer ships, the information drought is over. If it slips, we will say so on the news hub the same day.
