Combat, Squads, and Counters

How combat works in War for Westeros after the July 2026 update and Gamescom 2026 reveal: squad orders, cavalry mass, spear counters, giant trump cards, dragon breath, and the Night King's resurrection mechanic in RTS battles.

From Soldiers to Squads

The July 2026 development update changed how we should talk about War for Westeros combat. PlaySide is not selling a game where you babysit every swordsman. You issue orders to **full squads** that path, collide, and react together. Responsiveness, unit behaviour, and physical impact are the three words the studio used — and they spent a paragraph saying pathing is still being iterated because it has to feel right on first contact.

That puts War for Westeros closer to formation RTS design than to click-every-model action. Selection boxes still matter — see controls — but the unit of thought is the squad: spearmen, archers, cavalry, a giant, a dragon. If you come from Age of Empires, think in groups. If you come from Total War, think in companies, not in twenty individual captains.

The Gamescom 2026 teaser already shows Lannister troops moving as a mass before dragonfire hits them. Watch the clip for collision and scatter, then come back to this page for the counter rules PlaySide wrote down.

Weight, Trump Cards, and Why Blobs Die

Game of Thrones: War for Westeros — Gamescom 2026 Gameplay Reveal

Cavalry are described as carrying **great physical weight**. They can ride through exposed archer lines and scatter those squads. That is not a damage-tooltip detail; it is a collision rule. Parking bows in the open without a screen is a lost fight, not a risky one.

Every house has a high-impact **trump card**. The published example is a Giant slamming its club into the earth and launching entire enemy squads into the air. Targaryen's equivalent is a dragon — the Gamescom trailer's fire breath is the visual rhyme, and dragons can burn down enemy fortresses. Trump cards win fights that composition has already made close. They do not replace unit counters.

PlaySide's own warning: if you see cavalry charging, **amassing basic infantry will not save you**. You need the specific anti-cavalry role — they named a **light infantry spearman squad** — to shut the charge down. That is as clear a rock-paper-scissors statement as a pre-release RTS gets. Learn it before you open skirmish.

Heroes as Combat Multipliers

Heroes level up during skirmishes, unlock abilities, and bolster surrounding armies. Jon Snow does that from the front line. Tywin Lannister does it from the back line with precision buffs. Losing the hero is therefore a combat event, not just a narrative one: auras drop, rallies stop, and the squads that were leaning on them become ordinary.

Effective management means parking Tywin where cavalry cannot flatten him, and keeping Jon's rally bubble on the squad that is about to break. Ability timing still looks like QWER cooldowns from the developer diary. The July post adds progression inside a single battle — levels and unlocks — which rewards protecting the hero through the mid-fight, not spending him on a highlight-reel duel.

Faction identity rides on these roles. Stark combat is hold-and-rally. Lannister combat is economy plus coordinated output. Targaryen combat is trump-card air. Night King combat is attrition plus giant shock. The tier list will move when we see ability numbers; the roles are already official.

The Night King Resurrection Mechanic

Confirmed in the Gamescom 2026 trailer: the Night King's faction resurrects enemy soldiers killed in battle as new Army of the Dead units. This gives the faction an inherent attrition advantage that compounds as a match progresses. Human factions must manage clean eliminations rather than letting losses accumulate as enemy reinforcements.

For Night King players, resurrection rewards attritional play and patience. The longer a battle goes, the more troops you have. Focus fire on enemy heroes and elite units to deny conversion; spread your own squads to limit the value of every casualty.

For human players facing the Night King, the answer is spread formations, anti-air against giants, and area-damage abilities that burn through wight swarms without giving the Night King free raises. Track balance changes on our news page and revisit this guide after beta reveals exact resurrection rules.

Terrain Is Part of the Fight

Ashemark's two lanes exist so that flanking is a decision, not an accident. King's Landing fields will favour cavalry weight. The Wall will favour holds and anti-undead tools. Read Ashemark and biomes before you blame balance for a fight you took on the wrong ground.

Overworld collisions still generate these arenas. Winning combat on a bad biome wastes a good composition. Declining a fight — when the mode allows it — is a combat skill. Sandbox multiplayer will punish players who accept every prompt.

We will add damage tables, exact spear names, and cooldown values when PlaySide or a preview build publishes them. Until then, train the habits: screen your archers, bring spears to horse, spend trump cards on clumped squads, and keep the hero alive long enough to level.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is combat still real-time?
Yes. War for Westeros remains a real-time strategy game. The July 2026 update clarifies that orders apply to squads with physical collision, not that the game became turn-based.
What counters cavalry?
PlaySide explicitly named a light infantry spearman squad as the anti-cavalry answer. Massing generic infantry into a charge is called out as a losing plan.
What is a trump card unit?
A high-impact house-specific unit. The official example is a Giant that can launch enemy squads. Dragons are the confirmed Targaryen equivalent and can burn down enemy fortresses.
Do heroes change during a single battle?
Yes. Official text says heroes can level up, unlock abilities, and strengthen nearby armies during skirmishes.
How does the Night King resurrection mechanic work?
Enemy soldiers killed by the Night King's forces are raised as new Army of the Dead units. Exact raise percentages and triggers remain pre-beta and will be detailed when beta servers open.
Where can I see combat footage?
The Gamescom 2026 gameplay reveal trailer shows dragon breath on Lannister infantry and direwolves charging archer lines. The developer diary still has the longest pre-alpha look at squad formations.
